Research Engineer
Full-time · New York
Upstream Labs is a security research lab focused on Digital Impersonation & Deception — how attackers impersonate trusted brands, services, and identities to manipulate people online. Our first system, Grizzly, is real-time phishing detection for the web.
We're hiring our first full-time engineer — a hands-on research engineer who takes detection ideas from prototype to production. You'll own detection systems end to end: form a hypothesis about how a class of attack works, build a way to catch it, prove it against real adversarial data, and harden what works into systems people can rely on.
This is an individual-contributor role, not a management track — for someone happiest prototyping a new detection approach in the morning and tightening a production pipeline in the afternoon.
You might be a fit if you:
- Think like a researcher but ship like an engineer — comfortable reading a paper and building the system it implies, with the rigor to know whether it actually works.
- Have a background in security, anti-abuse, ML, or web measurement — a PhD/postdoc finishing up, or industry experience on a detection team.
- Want real ownership and the freedom to publish.
Details: Full-time, New York (remote considered for an exceptional candidate). Competitive salary plus founding-team equity.
Authorization: You must be eligible to work in the US. We can work with candidates on OPT.
